Its no doubt the best move.
If Miers had sat before the guillotine committee, she surely would have been grilled for her evangelical position in religion. That means that her Christian witness to being born again would have been shredded by some.
That in itself could have opened up the anti-religion closet for all sorts of weapons to be flashing forth against her. The ricochet could have glanced off US President George W. Bush as well, he too stating that he is a Christian, evangelicals claiming him for their own.
Then there were the conservative groups nailing Miers to the wall. I could not understand that for they basically were agencies that have an evangelical base. Nevertheless, some like Concerned Woman for America reasoned that she was not all that conservative, though professing doctrinal tenets like unto CWA.
There is much fear out there about another Sandra Day OConnor on the highest court. That indeed is a legitimate fear. We Red States enthusiasts dont need another Judas. But when I read the quotes CWA provided to defend their dislike for Miers, I could have read those same quotes in another vein than that Miers was liberal. Nevertheless, the CWA has the right to its own perspective.
All in all, Mr. Bush will come up with another person who no doubt will be even more proof-positive conservative than Miers. Of course, being a conservative myself, that can only be a good thing.
Now that brings me to Judge John Roberts. I still have my jitters about that handsome fellow. Time will surely tell the tale on what he is, where he stands and what drives his judicial judgments. May he not be another David Souter. Yet he could turn out to be just that.
Nevertheless, there is life after Miers. And Mr. Bush did not make a mistake. And Miers did not flub on any point. Its just life with its complications intact. We can live with it. There are other issues circling around humanity. They too beg for concern.
This too shall pass, in other words. We will move into Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas celebrations. We will move into New Years resolutions and more politics wrangling as usual. And Muslims will still slaughter infidels. So whats new?
I think that for Miers it must be a relaxing day. She can now thank her God that she wont have to be put through the horrific questioning and editorial responses from liberal media. And also negatives flying all around her from the conservatives.
The poor woman could hardly win with liberals not all that sure and conservatives not all that sure. Where could she find a place to stand finally?
I wish her well, and Godspeed.
