Washington, D.C. – Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League issued the following statement regarding the Rev. Jay Scott Newman's pastoral letter to the parishioners of St. Mary's Church in Greenville, S.C.
"The actions of Fr. Scott Newman, in instructing Obama supporters to receive the sacrament of Confession before they receive the Holy Eucharist, have demonstrated that there are priests in America who understand Canon 915 and are willing to fulfill their duties.
One day before the U.S. bishops gathered together in Baltimore and vowed to fight the abortion policies of President-elect Barack Obama, but refused to enforce Canon 915 and not admit pro-abortion 'Catholic' politicians to Communion, Fr. Newman issued the following statement to his parishioners at St. Mary's Church.
Fr. Newman noted that, if parishioners voted for President-elect Barack Obama, they should not present themselves for Holy Communion without first confessing their cooperation with an intrinsic evil:
"Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation," Fr. Newman's letter read in part.
Praise God for priests with mettle enough to put what's right and good for their flocks before what is politically expedient. We pray more men like Fr. Newman will stand up and enforce Canon 915. Until priests and bishops enforce the wisdom of Canon law, Catholics will continue, lost in confusion, to support policies antithetical to the Faith."
