A Sobering Thought
By Gabriel Garnica

Oct 10, 2008

We are heading toward perhaps the most important election in American history. Just ahead of us is a crossroads, a fork in the path that has two very different directions for us to choose. At this writing it has become increasingly clear that this event has moved beyond the candidates. Sure, we still see the groupie media fawning over their beloved Obama and frowning at McCain and Palin. Yes, only a blind imbecile, or a delusional liberal, can deny the blatant favoritism lavished upon Obama by such cesspools of bias as CNN, MSNBC, CBS and most, if not all, rags of Democratic propaganda such as the New York Times and its assorted partners in the print media.

One feels as if suspended over a twisted basketball game, where the referees and reporters are all corrupt in favor of one team, where the basket for one team is larger than for the other, and where the scoreboard is already showing a final score giving one team the anticipated victory. The crooked referees and reporters completely ignore the fouls of the favored team, exaggerate the errors of the disfavored team and cheer the latter openly and often. It is almost as if this game has been rigged shut from the start, steeped in a pile of lies, distortions, denials and hypocrisy.

It is appropriate that Barack Obama is credited with writing a book with “audacity” in its title, for audacity he owns in surplus. The audacity to accuse the GOP for this economic mess despite the fact that he was intimately involved with corrupt ACORN and Democratic efforts to force banks to enter absurd loans out of racial blackmail. The audacity to accuse anyone of lying when he has lied from day one about his associations, about his attack on born alive abortion survivors and about his true intentions for America. The audacity to pretend he is Christian when he is the antithesis of Christianity and will prove its worst enemy. The audacity to promote change when his brand of change will destroy the very nation he is selling it to.

Here we have in one place the most liberal, most radical and most dangerous individual ever to run for the top office of this land. Here we have a tragic irony, for African-Americans deserve so much more from a first presidential candidate. They deserve an honorable, honest and truly patriotic visionary of which they have many. They deserve a bastion of values, a model of courage and a true champion for their cause of leading America to greater heights rather than deeper depths.

Many good people of the past have faced such charismatic evil, such camouflaged treason, such insidious deception. Sadly, most if not all such people have fallen, often thirsting for greater freedom and progress, frightened by current events and markets and vulnerable to glib rhetoric. Few lies take root as well as lies planted in fearful, desperate and confused soil. Few trees bear as deadly fruit as those planted with the seeds of such lies on such soil.

Worst of all, America is not the first and, sadly, will not be the last to fall under such tyranny. Tragically, however, it will be the most transcendent victim, for evil shall finally strike down the nation that long championed against evil. Lest we ignore or forget the lessons of the past, herein lies a sobering thought from not so long ago of the danger whose shadow even now envelops us.

Beware Charismatic Men Who Preach 'Change'

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day and on July 4 I celebrate America's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord." And when the young leader said, "I will be for change and I'll bring you change," everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?

Would we?

Manuel Alvarez Jr. Sandy Hook

This letter, sent to the Richmond Times Dispatch, sounds too familiar for comfort, and too close for minds to conceive. Hard is it may be to believe, the Pied Piper has come claiming to rid our nations of rats but is actually hell-bent on fooling enough mental children to follow him to victory. So far has the mighty nation fallen that it is now susceptible to such cons and tales from charismatic frauds.

We face evil which hides behind claims of racism against all who dare reveal it. We face treachery which slides and ducks away from the light of truth. Finally, we face a foe protected by a media whose sole mission today is to hoist this enemy of our nation on its shoulders and carry him to victory, despite a resume with more holes than Swiss cheese and a past with more warts than past.

Even as we approach this precipice for a nation so blessed and privileged in the history of this planet, there is still hope that such a doom can be averted. From this point on, those who truly love this nation must rise up and band together. They must vote and encourage the vote against this sinister pretender. They must fight with the kind of passion that inspired the colonies to push out tyranny, the resolve that guided the North to preserve the Union and the dedication that immortalized the greatest generation.

The eagle is in the crosshairs of the vulture. History’s fruit of freedom is ripe for the picking. Evil is attempting its most audacious assault. What evolves from this fight, what transpires from this battle and the America that rises, or falls, from this cloud will largely depend on whether true Americans will fight for their home or let the liberal, secular mediacracy carry its chosen one to the mantle of power. The choice is up to us. Our weapon is the vote. Our battleground is our home. Our responsibility is the future of our nation and our children. History will describe whether or not we accepted the responsibility before us. Sadly, it will also tell whether this nation’s epitaph was written on a rainy Tuesday in November, 2008.
