The rescue of former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. military contractors, without a shot being fired, by that country’s military intelligence agents brings to light just how mindless Democrats are when it comes to dealing with Colombia and its effective leader.
The Operation
Colombian spies tricked leftist rebels into handing over the hostages in a daring helicopter rescue which Betancourt herself called “perfect”. Military intelligence agents infiltrated the rebel ranks and led the local commander in charge of the hostages, alias Cesar, to believe they were going to take them to Alfonso Cano, the rebel supreme leader.
The fooled rebels literally handed over the hostages to government agents disguised as rebel counterparts who, upon being airborne, announced to the hostages, “We’re the national army, you are free” prompting the hostages to leap and cry for joy.
Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos stated that the operation “will go into history for its audacity and effectiveness.”
Its Implications
The rescue is already being considered the most serious blow ever dealt to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which considered the four hostages their most valuable bargaining chips. Reeling from the deaths of key commanders and loss of considerable territory it once held, FARC is certainly stumbling right now, and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is one of the reasons behind those stumbles.
President Bush called to congratulate his ally Uribe, calling him a strong leader. Uribe, in turn, thanked Bush for his support, which has included billions of dollars in military aid. It is interesting that GOP presidential candidate John McCain had just left Colombia for Mexico when this operation occurred. McCain said he had been told in advance of the plans and also congratulated Uribe on its success.
Many believe that the four-decades-old guerilla organization is on its last legs, reeling under the weight of Colombian government efforts supported by the billions in aid supplied by the U.S. Suffering widespread defections and losses, the organization’s ranks have been cut in half and it is becoming increasingly ineffective and disorganized.
Democrats’ Attacks on Uribe Mindless
Uribe has long been America’s most loyal ally in the region, and he deserves all the help and support we can give him. The GOP has been supportive of him, and this approach has begun to pay big dividends. The greatest compliment that can be paid to the Colombian President is that Venezuelan tyrant Hugo Chavez hates him, and any leader Chavez hates must be one genuinely committed to freedom and peace, unlike the Venezuelan despot who stands for tyranny and treachery.
Given everything Uribe has done and his audacious leadership and efforts against terrorism, one could ask who would be foolish enough to disrespect or ignore him.
Apparently, the fools in this case would be Democrats, who have certainly shown no pattern of sanity in international relations in recent years. One need only witness how Nancy Pelosi offered “friendship” to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad while publicly scolding Uribe.
Human Rights Watch has joined the Democrats’ campaign against Uribe, claiming that “today Colombia presents the worst human rights and humanitarian crisis in the Western hemisphere.” For any organization to dare say that with Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti around is the height of asinine delusion.
In fact, many observers are troubled by Democrats’ attacks on Uribe for supposed human rights violations and corruption when the record shows that Uribe’s government has seen success in dealing with these issues. These observers note the Democratic stance against Uribe as “badly misguided” and wonder why Democrats like Al Gore have declared Uribe’s record “troubling” while advocating direct U.S. negotiations with the regimes of Kim Jong II and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The truth is, various Democratic groups have long been opposed to many elements of U.S.-Colombia relations, be it trade agreements, conflicting agendas or a myriad of other reasons. In typically Democratic fashion, these fools clothe their opposition as human rights concerns, despite the fact that facts contradict their imbecilic rants. In typically Democratic fashion, these people are more concerned with their personal agendas than supporting the one true ally the U.S. has in the region, and perhaps the most popular democratic leader in the world. In typically Democratic fashion, they have no problem offering friendship to dictators and despots like Chavez and Ahmadinejad while offering the back of their hand to effective, noble and courageous democratic leaders like Uribe.
Many of these people claim that Uribe’s government is corrupt and ineffective, including regarding its war on drugs and terrorism, while the facts show that he has dramatically cut violence and kidnappings, turned the tide on terrorists who were on the road to running his country and begun making significant strides against corruption within Colombia. These people wail on and on about Uribe’s human rights record while Uribe enjoys an approval rating of over 80% among his people, considered incredible for a politician in office since 2002.
The Betancourt rescue is just another brick in the wall proving that Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is the best thing that has happened to his country in a long time, and for the U.S. in the Western Hemisphere. Surrounded by populist demagogues, Uribe has forged a free country making great strides toward enhanced economic stability and democracy.
Neighboring a tyrant who despises both the U.S. and Uribe himself and has done everything he can to undermine both the U.S. and Colombia, Alvaro Uribe has managed to maintain close ties with the U.S. in general and the Bush administration in particular.
The more one thinks about it, those who attack Alvaro Uribe of Colombia are either against American interests in this region, ignorant or so steeped in their own delusional agenda that they cannot see the stupidity of their position. Not surprisingly, that description fits Democrats perfectly.
Conclusion
The daring and outstanding rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and others by Alvaro Uribe’s Colombian government is a classic example of why this leader’s efforts and accomplishments in his country are to be congratulated and admired. It is a slap in the face to those imbeciles so biased against Uribe for a variety of reasons and agenda that they cannot see the democratic leader from the sea of despots that surround him.
I do not know which is more asinine, attacking this country’s strongest ally in this hemisphere for alleged harms his own people apparently do not see or doing so while offering friendship to despots, tyrants and enemies of this country. This is the idiotic stance of people like Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore and their Democratic cohorts.
While George Bush and John McCain at least recognize Alvaro Uribe’s great strides and loyal friendship with this country, the Democrats treat Uribe as if he was the greatest threat to world freedom while kissing the fannies of freedom’s true enemies. While Republicans recognize the need to support Colombia financially and in trade, Democrats seek to sabotage that country’s economy using human rights pretexts to hide their true selfish agenda. Just witness Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s opposition to trade agreements with that country.
One theory as to why Democrats hate Uribe is that Uribe and George Bush like each other and Uribe has remained loyal to the American leader Uribe’s neighboring tyrant Hugo Chavez calls a devil. There might be something to this theory, given the fact that Democrats want to shop for curtains with every despot Bush dislikes. Leave it to Democrats to behave like children when it comes to handling America’s interests.
The more one thinks about it, it makes sense that Democrats would despise a genuine, sincere and effective leader who has made great strides in his country against corruption and economic turmoil. It makes sense that Democrats would attack a courageous and daring leader whose popularity stems from his people’s realization of his virtues more than from his efforts to spin things in his favor as Democrats seem to do all the time.
Given Democrats’ typically selfish and deceptive hypocrisy combined with usual unpatriotic agenda, it makes perfect sense that they would dislike Alvaro Uribe of Colombia, who represents precisely the opposite of everything Democrats are and possesses many of the virtues most Democrats never heard of.
Like any country, Colombia’s warts get more attention than its virtues. The nation of beautiful emeralds and flowers, delicious coffee and friendly people is often unfairly portrayed as a den of narcotic trade and corruption. Given the stance of Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore against Colombia’s fine leader and their pathetic justifications for that stance, Democrats are the ones who look like they are taking drugs and being corrupt. Democrats may try to sell change in the upcoming elections, but their stance against Colombia and Alvaro Uribe reminds us that Democrats’ typical lies, agenda and hypocrisy will change the day Al Gore dances like Shakira and Nancy Pelosi marries Juan Valdez.
